Tina Zonars, deputy chairman, Asian Art at Christie’s, said the estimated values were based on past auction sale results for comparable items
but that, because of their rarity, such data points were “few and far between.”
But she said the main reason prices blew past the estimates was the unexpected demand
for rare, high-quality items bearing the museum’s stellar provenance, she said.
